  • Most of my friends believe that I enjoy cleaning. Yes granted, when they call me up and ask what I am doing, oftentimes I will say cleaning. But that isn’t because I enjoy cleaning, I just simply enjoy a clean home, like most of us. Therefore, I am always on the look out for ways to shorten my cleaning time and optimize the way I clean….I am somewhat of a cleaning nerd you might say.

What I have found out over the past 2 years is the following: You do not need ultra strong cleaners loaded with toxic chemicals to have a clean home. In fact, I have found that baking soda and vinegar oftentimes work better than store bought cleaners. So today I want to share with you 12 ways to clean with baking soda, but before I do, let’s take a look at the benefits of cleaning with baking soda.

    • natural deodorizer
    • antiseptic
    • anti bacterial
    • non-toxic
    • biodegradable

That’s a pretty promising profile! So here are my favorite uses for cleaning with baking soda

1). Deodorize sofas and carpets. Sprinkle baking soda all over your sofa and carpets. Wait for 30 minutes then vacuum clean it up. Your sofa/carpets will be refreshed and odor free.

2). Cleaner clothes. The next time you do laundry, add 1 cup of baking soda into the washing machine. Enjoy fresher clothes!

3). Smelly shoes? (No judgment, it happens to the best of us!) Simply sprinkle some baking soda into your shoes and let it soak up any bad smells. Btw this also kills any bacteria- win win!12 Ways to Clean with Baking Soda4). Remove scuff marks off walls. Have kids or simply a clumsy spouse? Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with water to form a smooth paste. Take a sponge and gently rub the scuff mark away.

5). Deodorize your fridge. Forgot to package that smelly cheese into a Tupperware and now your whole fridge smells like camembert? Place a small container with baking soda into your fridge and let it soak up any smells.

6). Ant problem? Mix equal parts of baking soda and sugar in a small dish. Place anywhere where ants are and laugh like an evil genius as they feed on it.

7). For fellow pet owners– sprinkle some baking soda into the kitty litter box or napping spots of your pets for an instant better smell.

8). Clean a dirty sponge. Let’s be real here, is there anything grosser than a dirty smelly sponge? Nope! Remove bacteria and odors by sprinkling your sponge with baking soda and putting it into a microwave safe container filled with water. Microwave for 3 minutes and remove from microwave (careful hot!). Let it cool and squeeze out the water.

9).Clean your sink. Create a paste with 2 tablespoons baking soda and enough dish soap to form a smooth paste. Spread it around your drain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Scrub and rinse the dirt away like a charm.

10). Clean teapot and mugs. Remove any discolorations of dark tea or coffee by sprinkling some baking soda into the teapot/mug and adding some water. Let it sit for a minutes, scrub and rinse.

11). Garbage can deodorizer. Minimize the smells coming out your trash by sprinkling baking soda onto it. (This does not substitute taking out the trash regularly!)

12). A sparkling oven. Sprinkle baking soda into your oven and spray white vinegar on top. (It fizzes up wonderfully) Let it sit for 20 minutes or longer, depending on the stains and scrub clean.

This is right up my ally. I hate buying expensive cleaners and the awful smell they give off! I was familiar with a couple of them. #9 can also be used for your stove drip pans! I need to bookmark this list! Thanks so much!

Great tips. I love the sponge tip. I always have a sponge in my sink for cleaning off my dishes before loading the dishwasher but it gets so dirty!
