Wintertime is probably my most loved and yet disliked season of the year. The gorgeous soft pillowy snow and the frosted trees invite me to go outside… and so I do. A few hours later I’m sitting at home in my cozy socks and thinking about how fun the snow day was and then it starts. A little sneeze here, a little cough there and when I wake up the next day, my throat feels sore and my voice is completely gone. Oh man, here we go again!

Even if your immune system functions well, you probably get a cold from time to time during the winter. It’s totally normal and yet extremely annoying. It becomes particularly terrible when it drags out for an entire week. This is where the cold & flu tonic comes in! While our bodies are designed to fight off a cold or the flu without much help from us, this tonic can support it to do so quicker.

    Immune-Boosting & Anti-Inflammatory

The tonic is comprised of 5 ingredients, all of which aid your body in fighting off that nasty cold or flu.

    • Lemon juice: Has antibacterial and antiviral properties and is a good source of vitamin C.
    • Ginger: Keeps you warm, can help relive nausea and has anti-inflammatory properties.
    • Honey: Can help relief cough symptoms, balances out the acidity of the lemon and the sharpness of the ginger
    • Water: Helps flush out toxins in the body and prevents headaches.
    • Tumeric, optional: Curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, helps boost the immune system due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties.

In addition to sipping on this tonic, staying warm, drinking lots of fluids and getting rest can help your body to recover faster.

Making the cold & flu tonic

All you need to make this tonic is a blender, preferably a high-power blender. If you do not own a high-power blender, I suggest grating the ginger beforehand. After blending the tonic, I prefer to gently heat it on the stovetop and enjoy it warm, but feel free to drink at room temperature or even cold, to your own preference.

The tonic is best enjoyed fresh on the day you make it, as it does lose nutrients over time. Even if you don’t feel any symptoms, treat yourself to this drink regularly during the cold season – your immune system will thank you.

    Get well soon!
