    Ingredients for cucumber eye pads

Goodbye puffy eyes, hello healthy looking skin! Today we are making a beauty DIY that isn’t only super easy to create, it’s also very effective in nourishing that delicate skin underneath your eyes. We all know that area can be a bit of a troublemaker; whether it’s dark eye circles, redness, puffiness, … there are plenty of ways that area can cause some trouble.

Before we jump into the DIY, here are some preventative measures to keep that under-eye area looking great.

    • Drink plenty of water: Dehydrated skin looks dull and lacks elasticity. This can cause the thin skin underneath your eyes to look sunken. If you find it difficult to reach your daily water goal, try some infused water.
    • Get enough sleep: This one seems like an obvious tip but frankly a little reminder doesn’t hurt from time to time. Not getting a sufficient amount of sleep can cause your skin to look dull and in turn make the blood vessels beneath your skin more visible. A lack of sleep can also promote the buildup of fluids underneath your eyes causing them to become puffy. Making sleep a priority and creating healthy sleeping habits doesn’t just benefit your health but also that under-eye area!
    • Avoid too much sun: Sun overexposure is not only extremely unhealthy, it can also cause your body to produce too much melanin which can darken certain areas in your face (think pigmentation spots!) but also the area underneath your eyes. And of course never forget that sunscreen either! Your skin will thank you for it in the long run. 🙂
    • Be careful with alcohol: Alcohol is very dehydrating and can make wrinkles look more visible. Having a glass of water in between drinks can help – this also goes for preventing hangovers!

But even if we try our best, life sometimes has other plans and those 8 hours of sleep you were planning on having turn into 4. If you need a quick fix to brighten and depuff those eyes quickly, these DIY cucumber eye pads can help with that. To make them, you will need the following ingredients:

    • Cucumber: The green vegetable is the perfect under-eye remedy thanks to its hydrating, cooling and anti-inflammatory effect. It also has a good amount of Vitamin K which can help brighten the skin underneath your eyes. Since we are using the whole cucumber, including the skin, you’ll want to buy organic to avoid pesticides.
    • Aloe vera: The gel of the spiky succulent has a number of skin-beneficial properties including anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties. For this DIY you can either use fresh gel harvested yourself or store-bought aloe vera gel.
    • Vitamin E oil: The oil fights free radicals that prematurely age skin and helps the skin retain moisture.
    • Cotton pads: Round ones will sit more comfortably underneath your eyes. Unbleached 100% cotton pads can be composted afterwards.

How to use your DIY cucumber eye pads

Since these are stored in the freezer, they’ll be ice cold when you first take them out. Let them warm up a bit for a few minutes before placing them underneath your eyes. Keep them on for about 10 minutes. You can use the time for some mediation, resting or something relaxing. Once you are done, you can either gently wipe the excess off with a damp cloth or simply pat it into your skin.
