DIY Baking Soda Cleaning Paste

This DIY baking soda cleaning paste removes dirt, grease and stains! Perfect for deep cleaning your sink or oven.

Of all my DIY cleaners, this paste is probably my absolute favorite! The reason being that it works better than any store-bought cleaner for deep cleaning my sink. In the past, I have never been able to fully get rid of that slightly brownish hue my stainless-steel strainer and strainer basket had…but after trying this paste, they looked like new!

Ingredients

You only need two things to make this DIY cleaning paste – some baking soda and some dish soap of your choice. Depending on the consistency of your dish soap, you’ll need a little more or less of it. 

Why it works – A little science excursion 

Soap and baking soda are a perfect duo as they both fulfill different jobs. Soap is special in the sense that it is both hydrophilic (attracts water) and hydrophobic (repels water, can bind itself with oil). It can attach itself to dirt and grease and dislodge particles, which are then rinsed away with water.

Baking soda – just like soap – is alkaline. However, in addition it is also slightly abrasive, meaning it has more grit to dislodge stubborn particles and stains. Since most odors are acidic, baking soda can neutralize them.

What to use it on

• Stainless-steel cutlery – they’ll get their sparkle back!
• Removing coffee/tea stains form mugs
• Deep cleaning your oven or microwave
• Your fridge – perfect for removing caked on dirt
• Shower – make that hose look like new
• Grout – the soap will clean it and the baking soda will brighten it 

What not to use it on

As mentioned, baking soda is slightly abrasive, which is why it shouldn’t be used on the following materials:

• Glass 
• Ceramic stoves
• Wood
• antique silver
• aluminum cookware
• gold-plated serving pieces
• marble

Storing your baking soda cleaning paste

Unless you are tackling a large cleaning project, the recipe yields more than you need for one cleaning job. Simply store it in a glass jar and when you are ready to use it – take out a small amount and mix with a bit of water to rehydrate the paste.
