Spices for homemade chai spice mix on marble plate

After testing several variations of this chai spice mix for the past few months (yes, months!) it’s finally ready and I can share it with you. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever tested anything over such an incredibly long course of time – well except for maybe this easter bread right here. It was certainly worth the effort though, as this spice mix is incredibly delicious and balanced. Let’s take a closer look.

    Chai Spices

Keeping quite close to an authentic masala chai (the tea beverage the spice mix originates from), I used traditional spices for this DIY version. While there are lots of different versions – some also include fennel seeds or star anis – cardamom and ginger are typically the prominent notes. However, both spices are quite dominant in flavor, which is why I spent quite some time testing this spice mix to make sure all the flavors really shine through.

My version consists of cinnamon to the biggest part, which helps brings all the other flavors together.

How to use your homemade chai spice mix

There are a ton of ways on how to use your DIY spice mix. Here are some ideas.

    • Make your own masala chai – Simply boil some water and add black tea and a bit of your spice mix to the pot and let it infuse. Pour it through a sieve and add sugar and plant-based milk if desired.
    • Add it to a smoothie for an extra flavor kick
    • Sprinkle it on coffee, particularly lattes (It tastes especially good, if you also add bit of cacao powder to the mix)
    • Use it in baked goods such as chai spiced cinnamon rolls (recipe coming soon!), babkas, pancakes, waffles, French toast, cookies, etc.…
    • Switch up your breakfast and make some chai spiced porridge
    • Mix it into homemade ice cream

How long will the homemade chai spice mix keep?

Spices don’t spoil, but they do lose flavor over time. I recommend using your spice mix within 6 months for optimal flavor. However, this also depends on how fresh your spices are.
