Homemade Chai Syrup

This delicious and easy-to-make homemade chai syrup tastes amazing as a chai latte or as an addition to your coffee.

With Instagram and Pinterest being filled with pumpkin und gingerbread spice syrup recipes, I thought it best to do something a little different for this year’s fall/winter beverage. Since I posted a recipe for a homemade chai spice mix last year, I wanted to share this easy syrup you can make with it. Aside from the spice mix, you only need 4 extra ingredients. Let’s go!
Chai Latte vs. Dirty Chai
You have probably heard of chai latte but might not be familiar with the term dirty chai. The difference is simply that the latter contains a shot of espresso. If you dislike coffee and would like to enjoy it without, you can add this syrup to milk – with or without black tea – and enjoy it as a chai latte. Either way this syrup is tasty treat!
Gifting Homemade Chai Syrup
This DIY chai syrup makes a wonderful gift for fellow chai lovers and the amount can easily be doubled or tripled. The recipe yields a little over a 0.275 l bottle. (I like to upcycle my Fentimans lemonade bottle for it.) The syrup needs to be refrigerated but keeps for several weeks.

Do I need to sterilize the bottles
You can, but I often skip it, as the syrup needs to be refrigerated anyways. While your syrup will probably keep a bit longer if you sterilize the bottles, thanks to the sugar – which acts as a preservative – it’ll last several weeks without sterilizing them. So, it’s up to you. In my experience, the dishwasher or thoroughly washing your bottles by hand suffices. Just make sure your bottles are thoroughly dry before filling.
