Springtime is probably the most gorgeous season of them all. Everything starts to bloom again and that wonderful spring scent is in the air. If I had to describe the scent I’d call it something like a fragrant combination of fresh-cut grass, rain showers along with floral notes. That might just be my interpretation of it, but I think most people will agree that there is something about spring scents that just makes you happy. Whatever your interpretation of a typical ‘spring scent’ is, you can replicate it with a customizable spring scented stovetop potpourri!

    What is Stovetop Potpourri?

It’s a mixture of fragrant ingredients such as various types of herbs, fruit (or fruit rind), flower petals and essential oils. These are heated in a big pot and brought to a simmer. As the ingredients are heated, they release a wonderful scent throughout your entire home. It’s also a great way to add moisture to the air in dry homes. The scents can be customized to your liking and you can choose whether you want to work with herbs and fruits only or if you want to add some additional essential oils. The essential oils are optional but I think they intensify the smell plus they also add some extra health benefits and reduce bacteria in the air. (If you are a pet owner, you want to skip the essential oils for the safety of your pets.)

Stovetop potpourri can be simmered for as long as you wish but should be replenished with water frequently. You want to make sure to always have enough water in the pot so your ingredients won’t burn. Never leave your home with the stovetop potpourri still on the stove!

    Ingredients

What types of herbs and fruit should you use? You can use almost anything, though I do suggest that you ask yourself what scents work well together before just throwing random ingredients into a pot and hoping for the best. For a spring themed potpourri I suggest the following ingredients.

    • fresh rosemary
    • lavender
    • rose petals
    • lemon slices (or just the peels)
    • a few drops lavender essential oil
    • a few drops rose essential oil

Do not go overboard with the essential oils, thinking that more is better. If you add too many drops you can actually get a headache and it can be rather irritating as opposed to calming. I recommend adding no more than 5 drops per scent.

    Benefits

As I mentioned before there are various reasons why you should give stovetop potpourri a try. It is a wonderful and inexpensive way to make your home smell amazing without having to buy a ton of things to make it. You can add whatever is growing in your garden and get a second use out of fruit peels. The scent will not only put you in a good mood for sure, it will also freshen the air in your home. It’s 100% natural as opposed to any store-bought scented candles or air fresheners that often contain harmful chemicals. Plus it takes only a few minutes to make and you can simmer it for the whole day if you wish. It’s especially great for entertaining if you want to freshen your home up a bit before your guests arrive or if you want to treat yourself (and your home!) to something.

Hi Jesika! I unfortunately do not know where the blue pot is from since it was a wedding gift! I must admit however, that I usually use a normal pot for my stovetop potpourris and only used this one for photographic purposes 😉 Thanks for stopping by!

This recipe looks like a dream come true! However, I can access either fresh lavender or lavender essential oils. Is there something else I could use?

Hi Sarah! You can omit the fresh lavender and lavender oil. You can try it with other essential oils eg. lemon or orange essential oil would also be great here. 🙂

Lavender oil is safe for pets it’s one of the few my question is can dry fruit and flowers such as laced work the same way or does it smell less

          Hi there
Thanks for the information on lavender oil! The scent is definitely going to be less strong without essential oils. If you wish to omit the oils, I recommend using a generous amount of peels, herbs and flowers. Hope that helps 🙂
