Beat the summer heat with this refreshing tropical inspired smoothie.
We have been experiencing a serious heat wave the last couple of days here in Switzerland. The past days have been extremley hot with temperatures up to 35C (95F). It has even gone so far that the government has forbidden bbqs and fireworks due to the risk of fires. With the sun beating down like crazy, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a refreshing and healthy recipe with you. And what better way to enjoy the bounty of fresh summer fruit than with a cold refreshing smoothie?
Speaking of fireworks, Switzerland recently celebrated its birthday. It was fun to experience the occasion as a non Swiss because it truly is a big deal here which you don’t fully comprehend as an outsider. Let’s just say that the Swiss shoot more fireworks on that day than New Year’s Eve. Aside from Christmas, it’s actully the most celebrated day. Yup. I don’t get it either. The stores are usually filled with party items and articles covered in the Swiss flag and of course fireworks. When the news hit that fireworks are forbidden, the Swiss were quite angered. (At least as angered as the incredibly diplomatic Swiss citizens can be ;))
We managed to see fireworks despite because there are always organized fireworks by the goverment that are held over a lake. Since they are fired over the water they were still allowed. It was an incredible spectacle. If you are ever in Switzerland during the end of July, definitely go see the fireworks in Biel!
It’s funny how I am not a patriotic sort of person, but the longer I live here, the more I find myself rambling on about this beautiful country. I think the Swiss way of life might be getting to me! 😉
But enough about Switzerland, let’s talk about this gorgeous smoothie here! Made with cantaloupe melon, grapefruit, passion fruit and mango, it’s a healty refreshment for those killer hot days. You can make this for breakfast in the morning or take it with to work as a healthy snack in between. It retains its color well if stored airtight which makes it the optimal smoothie on the go. It does thicken over time so you may need to slightly thin it out with water if you don’t consume it right away.
The combination of the fruit is well balanced and the taste definitely reminds you of a tropical get away. The slighlty bitter taste of the grapefruit balances out the sweet flavors and gives it a refreshing kick. I found the smoothie sweet enough as it is, but feel free to sweeten it with maple syrup, honey, or another sweetner of your choice.
I made this smoothie in my Vitamix, but you can use any blender of your choice that’s powerful enough. This recipe makes 1 tall glass. If you wish to share it, double the recipe. If you are working with frozen fruit, skip the ice cubes and add water to thin it out until it reaches the desired consitency.
If you give this tropical smoothie a try, let me know in the comment section down below. Also be sure to tag your creations with #homebakedbliss so I can see them!
